Not much on it yet. But it's going to have awesome graphics, 3D capabilities without the need for glasses, backwards compatibility with NDS titles and it's not due for release until 2011. More info can be found at:

http://au.ds.ign.com/articles/107/1079233p1.html

and http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2010/100323e.pdf

I just knew this was going to be announced soon. :P

Cool! I've always liked where Nintendo has been going with their handheld devices. I hope this one will be as good as the DS is. However, I hope this doesn't completely replace the semi-old school 2d graphics that I feel are kind of associated with handhelds. I really like that game style, and it would be a shame if that were to be replaced by a gamecube that you can carry around.

The DS has double pane windows:

1. Touch Screen
2. Protector for the LCD.

One of these could be made into a 3D pane.

it adds depth, rather than attempting to make things pop out at you.

Thank goodness Nintendo's adding depth to their twenty-first century games, because I've yet to find any during the reign of the DS.

This article (http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/03/with-the-nintendo-dsi-xl.ars) has a video showing how they think it might work. It uses head tracking to simulate looking around things. It's pretty amazing looking, really.

It's a concept that couldn't really be used on a tv, though.

Also, the 3DS will be backward compatible with DS & DSi games.

Not to be a downer, but I believe Apple filed for a patent on head-tracking in 2006/2007.

Well, we don't know for sure yet if that's how they're going to end up doing it. They could still use it, though. They could either take their chances or license it. Companies license patent ideas all the time.

Head tracking is an old technique. I don't see how you could get a patent on the general idea. Even if Apple holds a patent on this I would expect it to be struck down if it went to court.

Edit: Actually, this is pure speculation as I haven't read the content of their patent. Disregard as you like.

Im thinking since this is a handheld and designed for only one player at a time they will probably do something like this (head tracking)

Wow, we're going to know a fair bit about it sooner then I thought. According to this kotaku article it will be playable at E3 in June: http://kotaku.com/5500611/nintendo-3ds-will-be-playable-in-june

They should have called it the Nintendo ThreeS, and had three screens.
