Hi there,
I've changed some settings in System Settings > Appearance > GTK+ Appearance:
Widget Style: QtCurve
Use my KDE fonts in GTK+ applications
Still it's pretty ugly... (see attachment)
I've installed kubuntu, using the kde-minimal meta-package and build up from there.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

It does not seem to be taking effect. Did you log out and back in?

yup I did.
Just to be sure, I removed kcm-gtk, reinstalled it, changed the settings back as in my first post, logged out, logged back in, checked:
same.
I remember using kcm-gtk-kde4 a while back, on another installation (http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=74689)
but unfortunately I can't get that one installed anymore
(Setting up kcm-gtk-kde4 (0.9.3) ... cd: 2: can't cd to /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings/)
Anyway, one way or another, I'd really like to solve this, but simply don't know where to start...

Ok, solved it!
I installed the package kcm-gtk-kde4 from source and now it looks awesome!
YAY!

Just curious, why'd you build it up from the ground instead of using the default theme?
