Hello,
I have installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell D630 laptop since 2 months and it was running smoothly, but today after a restart and after login to my account the Desktop is not appearing instead I see just small terminal window opened in the upper left corner. When I tried to google the problem I found many pages and they all were talking about the xserver is not started, and the solution is to run startx, but it is already started in my case.

Can any one help me on that plz.....

startx

will give you a basic GUI.

At the login screen, after you pick the user but before you finish putting in your password,
check the "Session" setting and make sure it is on "Gnome" ~
it sounds like you have it on old school "xterm"
