After spending a long time searching, I admit defeat, and come asking for your help!

I have recently been exploring the xfce wm, and like it a lot, except one big thing: I have a number of files and links on my desktop, but by default only the first part of the file name is shown unless the icon/file is selected.

Can this be changed so that by default more or all of a file name can be seen - as with gnome?

I hate to have to do this ... but: bump

Does Anyone have any ideas?

Epic Bump.
I really want to know that.

In Settings>Desktop>Icons you can 1) increase the "Icon size" and 2) enable and decrease "Custom font size". The more you change the numbers, the longer file names will be shown. But there will still be a limit where names are truncated. (Think of this as a workaround until you find the real answer.)
