see the desktop icon behind the data drive? how to fix this?

yeah that's annoying. There's something you can do in gconf-editor to have it not show desktop icons. If you open nautilus, you should see that driver under "places" on the left panel in the window there.

As for normal files and icons on the desktop, you can find them in your ~/Desktop directory.
