I used an old (not too old) Ubuntu 9.10 CD to try and run Ubuntu on my new laptop, and it boots to the first screen (one that offers options like try, install, test cd, etc)

once i select the "Try" option, the screen goes blank, and stays there.

I burned a second CD (actually DVD) 64-bit this time, and the same thing happens.

Anyone know what's going on?

My laptop is a Acer Aspire 5740-5513

just a little bit more info: i installed ubuntu on an external drive [using a different computer] i had my new laptop boot out of that just to see what happens.

i think it booted completely, since i heard the ubuntu startup sounds (three quick drum beats). Anyway, the same problem exists. I have a blank screen.

could this be a graphics issue? does ubuntu support my graphics card? It's the graphics card integrated with the i3 chip: GMA HD.

Try booting the live CD from a USB drive or SD card. Use Unetbootin to create a bootable flash drive.
