I did a fresh install on a new computer. Everything went smoothly. I pulled up a video on a networked computer (also ubuntu). It needed additional codecs. I installed codecs for Totem. I installed VLC and gxine. When I went to play the video with VLC a window opened asking me about streaming from network devices and I apparently made the wrong selection because vlc closed immediately. In fact all three media players close as soon as I try to play something on them. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the media players but it didn't help. I'm sure I could reinstall the operating system to solve this problem but there must be a better way. Any advice would be appreciated.

I believe you need to install Ubuntu Restricted Extras to play just about anything......

I tried this. It looked like it might work for a second but no such luck. Also, I forgot to mention the first time- movie player and vlc shut right down but gxine stays open with audio only and no picture.

It's an avi file. I get video from streaming internet within Mozilla but nothing from stored avi, divx, xvid on any of my shared computers on my network. I haven't tested dvd yet and I don't have any avis, etc. stored on this computer to test with yet.
