Clean install hangs showing just the wallpaper

Hi,

I am attempting to perform a clean install from the CD but the installation hangs as follows:


Select Install from the boot menu
Shows the pulsing Ubuntu logo
Displays the default wallpaper and mouse pointer

This is as far as it gets.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue may be?
