8.04 upgrade interrupted, how to finish

I'm working on a notebook with a HDD that has some bad sectors.
while doing upgrades after the initial install, froze up so I did a restart.
now there are several [40] updates that are incomplete, when I click on upgrades, I see the incomplete one flash across the screen.
I would like to go to 8.10, then 9.04, but can't until these [upgrade] are finished
I have to install the HDD in a PC [no cd/dvd, no boot from USB] to do a new install, so I'm wondering if I can fix what I have...

when I go to update manager, I still seem to have 42 pending
any way to slow that process down, so I can see what's happening/missing?

I'm doing a new install
the HDD is questionable on this notebook, I gave it 4 partitions of 20g each in hopes that the bad sections will be isolated

If you installed Hardy again don't upgrade!!! Nex month new LTS will be out and then you will be able to upgrade from 8.04 directly to 10.4.

Perfect Good deal I would prefer to run LTS as I learn more about how to deal with unbuntu.

Anyone have any ideas about how to isolate the bad?

I've done 4 installs so far, every install has different problems.
this old Gateway notebook, can only be installed by putting the HDD in my pentiumIII pc...
I'm convinced this notebook is sound except for the HDD

I probably have to buy a new HDD
