I am in a LUG currently where we have the same group or 2 or 3 idividuals who regularly attend with the odd few other showing up only very rarely.
Now obviously we have thus far failed in attarcting others to join the group.
So does anyone here have any ideas or tips on how to make the Lug more attractive to people who are not yet part of it?

Maybe go into town and set up a stall or something advertising your LUG and maybe take some Ubuntu (or your chosen distro) CDs with you? It's worth a try and will give your LUG an activity.

Sounds like the situation with my local LUG (Nottingham). I can imagine that the first impressions for a new member aren't good when they attend a meeting only to find 4 blokes in a room above a pub. We do have a couple of guys that really try to get the LUG more popular but with not much success. In the past we ran open days which seemed to go OK and we also ran a stall at the local computer fair.
Fersure: good ideas. It's something we should really look at doing again. We did in the past and it seemed to go ok.

Glad it went OK for you. I'd do it myself but no LUG in my area AFAIK. Another idea for those interested in doing this: If you choose to advocate Ubuntu when doing this, maybe also take along Kubuntu and Xubuntu live CDs? Let people know that in the world of FOSS, there's a LOT more choice.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses so far. I have thought about open days, stands at computer fairs etc in the past. Howeever organising them can be a PITA to say the least.
I'll have a chant with the others this week and try to arrange something. Thanks for your help.

I myself live near Chesterfield, but I'm a member of the Bassetlug (http://www.basset.lug.org.uk/) group.
I'll be discussing some activities with everyone next Friday, and next month I should be giving a talk on developing with Mono, it'll be very high level but hopefully will get people interested.
