Right now I am running Ubuntu on an older Gateway, basically as a test model to see whether or not I like it (I do), how hard it is to work with (not TOO hard), and whether or not I want to put it on my main pc (I do - I think).
So right now THAT machine is a dual boot with WinXP on the master and Win7 on the slave.
So, my question is - can I add Ubuntu as a third OS on that machine without screwing up my Windows installations (there are some programs in there I want to keep and not pay for again).
And, as another question, can Ubuntu be installed on an external drive?

As for the first question, Ubuntu detects the current operating systems when installing, and adds them to GRUB automatically, so triple booting is possible. Also see this post for more info http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6648234&postcount=2

Concerning installing Ubuntu on an external drive, yes you can install it on a USB flash drive or on an external HDD as long as your BIOS allows you to boot from this device.
