What do you do when you are trying to uninstall a nVidia driver to install a new nVidia driver using the terminal & it stalls at Removing all DKMS Modules? I let it hang for about 10 minutes but the CPU was getting noisy & aborted.

I cannot open the Hardware Manager or Synaptic Package Manage. This is a new Ubuntu 9.10 64bit install that seems to have a lot of issues. Namely, with nVidia video drivers.

Why is it acting this way? Can this uninstall/install be better preformed while booted into Root?

All suggestions are appreciated.

I tried this in Root & all went smoothly. I had previously installed v173 because I couldn't boot at all. I got the Removing all DKMS Modules error while trying to install a newer v185 driver. Today I was able to install v185 in Root.
