I just did a 8.04 install on my pentium 4 notebook by using an adapter to plug the 2.5" HDD into my pc's IDE bus. any little issues like the lack of sound will probably go away if
I do a fresh from the ground up 9.04 install, is there a way to do this on line?
this notebook has no cd/dvd so I can't just burn a cd & boot from it,
the bios doesn't support booting from usb
no static ip, so network boot is out

Only by sequentially upgrading through to 8.10, then 9.04

Make sure your up to date. In a terminal run:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
Then press Alt+F2 and enter:
update-manager -d

ah except
that method is trying to install the latest & greatest, I'm not ready to run beta's quite yet
the update manager says my system is up to date & offers to upgrade to 10.04

I was hoping for something along the lines of maybe install 9.04 as it's own partition,
dual boot & delete the old version as I get the new one working?
