About a month ago, I was using ubuntu and everything was fine. But then when I updated, my sound driver got messed up and I had no sound. I then reinstalled ubuntu and everything is fine. But now the update manager keeps nagging me. How can I either stop it from showing up altogether, or stop it from updating sound-related stuff.

hello

it was a problem which i have also experinced.
the case is that when we update our kernels get updated.
linux keeps a backup of kernels which can be seen while booting.
a list of kernels are shown on a black and white screen.
my problem was my laptop couldn't keep any backup of the older kernels.
and the new kernel had some problems or bugs
which uninstalled my alsa drivers.
so i stopped updating and now my lappy is working more than fine.

one more thing-----
do not install the proprietary hardware drivers in the system->hardware drivers section.

they may also be a problem.

everytime the the update manager comes just close it.
