It works fine, as does 2.6.44rc1. Is there some hidden gotcha that's going to sneak up on me if I use one of these in production on Karmic?

Because Karmic is built on 2.6.31. 2.6.31 are the only ones list in Karmic's repo.

Thank you. I assumed since other components that shipped with Karmic got upgraded, Linux also would, short of some problem. I'll try to do my research better before asking next time I have a question.

No problem. I believe they are using 2.6.33 in Lucid, but I am not sure. I am waiting for the Beta1.iso to install it again. You can install other kernels, but they may or may not work very well. I have never tried it.

Lucid will use 2.6.32 - there is a discussion thread in the Lucid forum - looks like 2.6.32 will be the Lucid kernel.

Cool, I don't mind. I think it is going to be the 2nd best Ubuntu release for me. Jaunty holds the title because it is what converted me.
