So I know the default search engine will be Yahoo!* in Lucid, but was wondering how it's usage is counted to give revenue to Canonical. For example, will using Yahoo! now in Karmic provide revenue, or it it only Lucid onward? Is it only while using Firefox, or will it work while using other browsers (Chrome, Konqueror, Epiphany, etc)?

----------------
*Note: "Yahoo" is a misspelling. It's "Yahoo!", eg. "Wow, Ubuntu's new default is Yahoo!!" :p

Never mind, sorry.

I'm waiting for a Yahoo version of the "Let me google that for you (http://lmgtfy.com?q=let+me+google+that+for+you)" website.

*off topic rant begins*
I'm also waiting for Yahoo to fix their darn servers - some show 127.0.0.1 as their public IP address in the headers of email, some of their domains are listed at rfc-ignorant.org (http://rfc-ignorant.org) and I've recently noticed several servers associated with Yahoo Groups (http://yahoogroups.com) being listed at spamcop (http://spamcop.net)
*rant ends*

What I don't understand is that Yahoo is dumping it's search infrastructure and using B'ing from Microsoft.

So in effect, Canonical and Ubuntu is supporting Microsoft, which is in turn supporing Ubuntu.

My head is about to explode.

Slightly condescending but ultimately helpful, I love it. I'll have to start putting that to good use.

That's an amusing incidental aspect of the deal that a number of commentators have pointed out, yes. Microsoft will be indirectly contributing financially to an OS that steals its users.

Feels more like Microsoft's indirectly funding Canonical to make Ubuntu look more like OS X. How's that for an amusing incident.

So I don't suppose anyone "in-the-know" out there has an answer to my question? Am I (or others) helping Canonical by using Yahoo! in Karmic? I ask because I may have some people delay upgrading to Lucid.

This is how it works:

1.Install Ubuntu.

2.Switch to google on the first boot.

3.Canonical gets money

4.Microsoft gets nothing.
