View Full Version : [SOLVED] Problem installing Ubuntu on a brand new hard disk

I've just put a new hard drive into my PC, as I got a message telling me there were problems with the old one (which I already suspected) when I tried to install Ubuntu 9.10 on it.

I then booted the PC from the Ubuntu CD, went through the whole installation process, then rebooted at the end to get the message "Error, no such device" repeatedly. The PC still boots from the CD and will run Ubuntu from the CD.

I repeated the process from scratch, with exactly the same result. The disk is a Seagate Barracuda 7200, exactly the same as the old one except twice the capacity (500 Gb).

Surely, if I'd plugged the disk in wrongly (entirely possible) then it wouldn't have installed Ubuntu at all, and given me the error message then, wouldn't it?

I am assuming you did install to the new drive. Does the BIOS show both drives and which drive is set to boot first?

There is only one drive, I took the old one out and replaced it with the new one.
