Help applying visual effects...sudo command?

I'm trying to set my visual effects to one of the two higher settings, but the appearance box keeps saying it is unable to change the visual effects setting. Is there a sudo command I could use for this?

This is not a permission problem but a driver issue. Make sure you have the proper drivers installed to activate additional effects.
