Does Gmail have unlimited storage?

On gmail.com it says: Lots of space
Over 7432.275881 megabytes (and counting) of free storage.

But when I log in and go to my settings> accounts and import tab> Add additional storage:You are currently using 270 MB (3%) of your 7432 MB.
Need more space? Upgrade your storage.

I click on upgrade your storage and it takes to:

Purchase additional storage
Select a plan:
20 GB ($5.00 USD per year)
80 GB ($20.00 USD per year)
200 GB ($50.00 USD per year) includes free Eye-Fi card
400 GB ($100.00 USD per year) includes free Eye-Fi card
1 TB ($256.00 USD per year) includes free Eye-Fi card

I thought Gmail had unlimited storage for free?
Can someone enlighten me? I think I have misunderstood something.

No, it never was unlimited. It is growing, and if it keeps growing, on the end of time it will be unlimited.

I know I have used only 3% of my storage, but I just dont understand why they offer the user to buy additional storage if its growing?

Gmail rolled out in 2004 with 1GB of space. Since then, it has increased by 6GB. At the same rate (assuming it stays the same), it will take a 13 years to get to 20GB. And by time they would offer more than 20GB to paying customers.

What if someone wants more than 7GB now?

Because it grows at a rate that suits the vast majority of users. Some users, though, have a ton of huge attachments and such they want to store online, so they give you the option to pay for growing your storage faster than other users do.

Because it isn't growing that quickly.

The additional storage is for things like PicasaWeb and Google docs, which now lets you host any type of file you want, not just documents.

7gb can disappear pretty quickly when you're working with 14bit 12.1mp uncompressed RAW files from a DSLR.

Actually, there was a time when gmail offered infinity plus one amount of storage:
