Mozilla has launched today a new site to promote Firefox add-ons:

We are excited to launch Rock Your Firefox today as a place where Firefox users can learn how to customize their Web experience and discover cool new add-ons.

The site, called Rock Your Firefox (http://rockyourfirefox.com), will be featuring a new add-on every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

What's the difference between addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox and this?

I think it's just a blog to recommend an addon every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday - I don't know why they don't just put it on the addons homepage...

You are not the only one asking this question. There are already comments on that site suggesting that would be better to implement this into the Mozilla Add-ons site. I also posted a new comment there (not visible yet).

I'm not sure why Mozilla has decided to create a new site for this. Perhaps they have bigger plans that we don't know yet. For instance they recently decided to change the "recommended" add-ons to "featured add-ons", but the site still show them as "recommended". So I guess the new site is part of this new policy.

I hope they feature more extensions than those available in the recommended list. There are some great extensions that don't get much attention. This is one of the reasons I'm doing something similar on my blog (http://lovinglinux.megabyet.net/?cat=8) for a month now. I'm publishing a review of one extension per week, with a video demo. I missed last week because I've got the flu, but I will posting a new one soon.

I hope they test the extensions they feature for stability and compatibility; extensions are one of the best ways to make your Firefox run like crap.

Yes they test them. Any extension submitted to be public available at Mozilla Add-ons site is tested and scrutinized by an editor. Extensions marked as experimental are not reviewed manually, but those are not included in the recommended/featured list. Nevertheless, any extension submitted to the site, experimental or not, are scanned for malware and automatically tested for several possible problems and a report is provided to the author/editor, so any issue can be examined to determine if it is a false positive or not. See example below:

The example above is from my FoxMediaCenter extension, which is under development for about a year. I have requested to make it public only since version 4.0.1, but it was denied by the editor, due to possible conflicts of some of it's javascript functions. The problem was very localized on just a couple of functions among 19.000 lines of code. I have fixed the problem and had to submit the extension again. Still waiting for it to be reviewed again by an editor, so the extension is still marked as experimental.

BTW, I have 51 extensions installed and the only one causing issues is Prism, from the Ubuntu repository. Prism is preventing Firefox 3.6 from starting. I'm not sure if it affects the default installation of Firefox 3.5.

My Firefox takes only 5 seconds to load and works like a charm.

Just how many add ons does anyone need? What's the benefit of making a browser like an American 1950's car?

Well, I use every add-on I have installed, otherwise I would have much more than 51 and my Firefox does not behave like a 1950's car. As I said, Firefox takes only 5 seconds to load here and general performance is very good. But I'm very selective about which add-ons I keep.
