Can someone please help with this error message:

gedit has not been able to detect the character coding.
Please check that you are not trying to open a binary file.
Select a character coding from the menu and try again.

If I open OpenOffice first and then the document it works fine. If I use the shortcut directly, it won't open.

Not overly impressed with 9.10 so far; things seem much slower, and it's certainly not as simple to find things as the old layout was.

Anyone?

Still having this issue, and am really unhappy with upgrade.
It's extraordinarily slow to do the most basic of tasks.

Will definitely be rolling back to previous version. This one is rubbish.

Already have to use a virtual Win7 over this in order to get iTunes (required to access audiobooks), using this upgrade has made me consider scrapping all together and just using Windows.

How have you upgraded? By the soft upgrade? Better reinstall from scratch IMHO because some remnants of the old Ubuntu version can cause troubles.

As for OOo, you can try to install the Sun version: [Ubuntu] Installing OOo on Debian and Co. (http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=68)

Thanks for the reply. I upgraded using the prompt through the upgrade manager.

No time to install from scratch at the minute, but am now thinking I'll wait for the new version.
See if that resolves the issue, otherwise will need to do exactly as you say, and go back from scratch.
Either to 8.10, or just to Win7.

Will definitely try the OOo you suggested. Thanks for that! :-)
