If ubuntu was proprietary, how much would it cost ?
I want to know because I want to donate to ubuntu for each version I use. So how much would Lucid Lynx costs if it was proprietary ?

I suppose the value is a relative variable (as is all value). How valuable is it to you?
A gold ring is something very valuable, but a potato becomes more valuable than all the gold in the world if you're on a desert island - you should make up your own mind as to how much it is worth to you.

Well, Windows 7 Home Premium is around $200. The upgrade package to Snow Leopard costs $29. So my guess would be somewhere in between.

Still, it's hard to say since a majority of the stuff shipped in Ubuntu isn't actually a product of Canonical, but of several independent projects.

Just because some software is proprietary, doesn't mean it has to cost money.

Yeah, it's what the scouter said about Ubuntu's price level.

$5.99

Because that's how much it costs at a local used computer store.

I would pay my own weight in gold, plus a king's ransom, for it.

Assuming we are, of course, going on perceived value. I believe that most CD distributors are selling boxed sets of Ubuntu for about £5-£10 a piece, and some sell documentation alongside their boxed sets for a little extra. Which is actually a pretty reasonable price for an OS, in my opinion.

It should cost £ 138.03 , because that is the price of Professional - Professional support for Ubuntu Desktop Edition for 1 Year.

I will donate 25 EUR when Lucid comes out because I will be upgrading.

$49.99 US It seems like this what people always charge for Linux distros here.

How much money do you have?
Take $10 out for yourself and send in the rest.

To be real, if it were proprietary:
initial cost $50
advertisement $25
bug fixes $10
fee in case Ms sues $10
Total: $95

Getting your 2¢ in; priceless

[I say from $25-$50]

i want to say that the upgrade price for Mac's is a bit different idea.
you already had paid 1000+ for the computer with specs that could arguably cost half
the other part might aswell be the OS so after paying so much the upgrade price must be lower.

but a price in between that sounds good.
