Hi,

I play games sometimes, and I'm currently experimenting with blender, so sometimes 512 vram isn't enough, by Bday is coming up, and I want a nvidia graphics card that supports openGL. Anyone know of a good one?

I didn't know Vram mattered that much in Video cards these days, I mean, yeah, I can understand it mattering to some extent, but my 1gb nVidia card doesn't compare at all to quite a few of the modern cards, even if they are only 256mb.

When buying a Graphics card myself, I tend to just buy one that's in my budget, I bought a 9600gt the other week, whilst it isn't really the best of graphics cards in the world, it does what I need to do really well.
It plays quite a few games on full-settings, every Linux game i've tried runs fine, every DirectX game i've tried runs fine and it was only £60 new from Maplin.
You may think, meh, it sucks, but it plays Gears of War perfectly and various other games, I don't know why i'd want to pay more.

Don't spend too much for something you won't be putting to full use, testing out Blender doesn't require you to spend £250+ just to render a few images, it'll still be the same outcome, not dependant on render time.

If vram doesn't matter, then what does? I want to have my games run a bit faster, something the average gamer would use, it just has to support openGL.

It matters for screen resolution. If you want to run hardware intensive games, in HD, with out a frame rate hit, you need alot of vram.

I believe they all do. What's your price range? The GTX 250 is what I run. It supports open gl. It runs about $125, and is everything all, but the most hardcore gamers would ever need.

Around $300, a little over is fine.

I personally am looking at a GT250 w/ 1GB. Its basically a rebranded 9800GT+ or something like that. Its not too expensive either.

Lol I'm going to sound VERY outdated w/ my favorite linux compatible gfx card. The the geforce fx 5500 256mb is my fav and it runs everything I've thrown at it so far beautifully. Runs about $40 on newegg.

Make sure to get the Core 216 version.

Make sure to get the Core 216 version.

Why?

The core 216 version has a 216 shaders and 72 texture mapping units, standard- 192/64.

It wont make a huge difference, but its worth getting the 216.

Those are still $40?

If you want to talk about very outdated, I just worked on someone's computer that had a geforce 2 mx 400 in it. The bad thing is that I remember when those were decent video cards. Do you remember when voodoos were top of the line?

Yeah, they are still $40. Getting an nvidia AGP card isnt exactly easy these days, and its better than a 5200...just.

I remember voodoo 2s being 'OMG you paid HOW MUCH for that thing?'...and then drooling over them running 'unreal'. I also remember when the voodoo 1 came out. Not that they were common.

I just heard nvidia saying that due to fan problems all geforce carsd should be taken out of linux computers.

The bug you are speaking of affects Windows machines running a particular driver. It was said the bug may effect 10.04 users, but mine has not climbed over 50 degrees, and that's running it on the performance setting.

LOL. You are kidding, right?

There is a bug with some of the newer drivers with linux/BSD (195.xx I think) but its pretty easy to roll back the drivers.

nVidia wouldnt ever say you should take out all the nVidia cards from linux computers...it would be a very bad business move if nothing else.

He offerd this link (http://maximumpc.com/article/news/nvidia_removes_linux_solaris_drivers_due_overheati ng_bug) as proof. MaximumPC not to be confused with NVIDIA, and "NVIDIA recommends rolling back drivers" not to be confused with "Remove your cards!!11111"

Exacltly.

Heh, even if I was using the 195.xx.xx drivers, it wouldnt be an issue for me. Fanless 8600 GT :D

Yeah, they are still $40. Getting an nvidia AGP card isnt exactly easy these days, and its better than a 5200...just. I wasn't thinking about how rare AGP cards are. That geforce2 mx 400 I was talking about was a conventional PCI card. I don't even think you can buy those anymore, can you?

My voodoo 2 card came with Turok the Dinosaur Hunter made to only run with a 3DFX card. I couldn't believe how awesome it was. I tried that game again about a year ago and couldn't believe how much it sucked.

What, MX 400 or PCI cards? PCI cards are still pretty common, if not used that often- they still make them because virtually every x86 computer since the 486 days has a PCI slot.

As for the MX 400- well...yeah. Actually, just for fun, check this-

Old games tend to lose thier gloss, dont that? Well, 1st person shooters do anyway, I'm still play "X-com- enenmy unknown" *Xcom - UFO defence in the US) a good 15 years after it came out. Civ2 and Colonisation still get the odd spin as well....

Wow! And it's still $32.99 plus shipping. What a great buy. A card like that shouldn't be more than $15.00.

I can see why you would say that..and while I hardly think that the GF2 MX 400 is a great card anymore, its the cheapest PCI video card at newegg-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010380048+1069609642&QksAutoSuggestion=&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Configurator=&Subcategory=48&description=&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=

They actually want $38 for the same card with TVout. A PCI 8400 GS is $55, where a PCIe 8400 GS is (literally) half the cost.

PCI video cards are always more expensive. Which is a pity, I've got a few old 'corporate' boxes with no AGP that could do with a nice PCI video card, but they are out of my price range here (PCI 6200 here is $85, 8400 is $115) AGP isnt exactly cheap now either, its $28 for a FX 5200 that isnt much better than the old MX 400). At least I've got a few old AGP cards hanging around, including a GF 2 MX 400 and a FX 5200 LOL, I can use on boxes that have AGP
