I've gone through the instructions on the java site but this still does not register using the 'java -version' command. I've installed everything that has java6* in Synaptec but Mozilla still doesn't show it is upgraded.

Mozilla shows:

IcedTea Java Web Browser Plugin

File name: IcedTeaPlugin.so
The IcedTea Java Web Browser Plugin 1.6.1 (6b16-1.6.1-3ubuntu1) executes Java applets.

When I go to the java website I get:

erifying Java Version

NOTE: If you recently completed your Java software installation, you may need to restart your browser (close all browser windows and re-open) before verifying your installation.
Download Free Java for Linux

I see there is only a *.bin download for Ubuntu so I tried to install it but Firefox still does not recognize the install.
