View Full Version : What's your Geek Code?

I was bored yesterday, so I updated my Geek Code, and to my surprise there's no Geek Code thread on TCC !

If you want to make your own Geek Code, go to The Code of the Geeks (http://www.geekcode.com/geek.html) and create one, or update the one you already have.

It's a fairly old site, but it still works, and there's even still a decoder (http://www.ebb.org/ungeek/) out there

I must say that I'm not much of a geek myself, and I've been rather lazy, I only did a basic format, might go back and tidy it up a bit.

Good luck, it's fun to do when you have nothing better to do.

Is nobody interested in this internet classic?
It may take a bit of time to do, but it's fun ! :)

I looked at the page and read it most of the way through. It borders on nerdity unfortunately =P. However if it was more up-to-date i'd be a little more interested in it, otherwise i have little time to come up with it. (Looks confusing but its fairly straightforward enough.)

I'd rather have a generator than to do it myself manually, sorry.

How old is this site:

Don't even think about trying to view my homepage without the latest version of Netscape.
Netscape? Wow that's old.

Emacs sucks! pico forever!!! That's been replaced with nano.

I've given up trying to achieve Linux.God status, but welcome the OS as a replacement for DOS. I only boot to DOS to play games.
DOS?

I play games or mud on weekends, but still manage to stay off of academic probation.I haven't heard that term in a while.

Page 7b is a toughie because I don't have either type of account, nor do I hate linux/UNIX.

Page 9 I can't answer correctly either, because I don't even know what linux.os.whatever.* is

Page 10, I don't use emacs at all, but I know what it is; I use leafpad.

Page 13, I have to answer the last one even though I don't want to.

Page 16, haven't even installed it before, don't want to, so I can't answer correctly.

Page 17, I've used macs, they don't suck, nor do I use them. Can't answer correctly.

Page 21, what the HELL is a Cypherpunk?

Well, here's mine.

Ah, well this site IS old indeed!

It's not that old. I was fixing a family members computer the other day and Netscape was the default browser!

My cousin who had tried to fix things on the computer and made things worse and is pretty techie for most people, didn't even know what Netscape was.

I am a youngin on the internet compared to most, even though I got on the net the day it was available locally from a dial-up modem. I guess because of this it makes me think back to the days of Netscape and pre-google with some romanticism.

Of course back then I tried downloading Red Hat and installing it on my 386 computer (it took something like 36 floppy disks) and had no luck with it at all. I didn't try Linux again until ubuntu, though by then I had much more experience with things. I even had unix experience from working with the internet providers server (which back then all ISP's gave you a Unix shell with your account).

linux.os.whatever.* = Usenet. You heard of newsgroups? This is it's daddy. Usenet was available to me pre-internet access from a local free BBS. (Which you can still log into to this day, or even telnet into which I do from time to time). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

I use to monitor dozens of usenet groups back in the day and get a few hundred or more posts sent to me directly through the BBS. Back then PGP use to be the only way to tell if someone was posting as they really where to a usenet group such as linux.os.*.

A lot are virtually dead now, but want know something interesting? They could take down the internet tomorrow, but usenet wouldn't go anywhere as it still has the backup in place to use dialup modems to transfer from local to local through the country. Usenet will never truly die as long as people keeping using it internet or no internet.

And...

Somewhat accurate, however I feel that sometimes one has to interpret the spirit of the text, rather than taking it verbatim.

Binary isn't nerd speak unless you're translating it by hand, which you're not.

See my signature.

Updating the geek code is kind of a touchy subject. The original code is copyrighted to the original author, so you'd need his permission to update it.

However, a completely different code known as OmniCode (http://www.gadgeteer.net/omnicode/) as been created as a replacement for GC. It's more customizable, offers more information, and is (generally) easier to read. It's also been licensed under the CC-SA2.5 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/2.5/) license, meaning you can make updates and the like without fear of legal repercussions.
