This thread is aiming for the people that particularly using FX5500 on ubuntu 9.10 (but of course other card that works with the same driver also welcome).

I'm currently using the driver provided by ubuntu repo — Nvidia 173.14.20 (recomended one). I can say it is doing quite well — the video is ok, the performance pretty good (compiz etc), except the tearing playback video (which can be eliminated if I turn the compiz off).

Now, I recently stumbled upon the newer driver — Nvidia 173.14.25 with the release date: 2010.02.11, for linux 32-bit from Nvidia official website. My questions are (and also some advice needed):

Should I upgrade to the newest version provided by Nvidia?
Is there anyone out there already succeed using that driver? (I mean, is it working with ubuntu 9.10).
Is it tearing still appear?
If the advice saying I shouldn't upgrade, please tell me the reason.

Thank you in advance.
