Ok I have to disable Compiz and revert to Metacity [1].
However, the drop shadow introduced by Metacity Compositing has been bugging me. Personally, I find it jarring especially the shadow under the top panel. I do appreciate the other features provided by Compositing, so I would rather not disable Compositing completely.
Any idea how to disable only the drop shadow?

[1] Been pulling my hair out from random system freeze and crashes for weeks. I tried many things without success, but the latest action in disabling Compiz appeared to be working. Though it would take at least another week before I declared it fixed.
