Random topic of the day: post your favourite movie fight scene.

My pick is the fight scene between Nick Condon (played by James Cagney) and Captain Oshima (John Halloran) from Blood on the Sun, a 1945 anti-Japanese propaganda film:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqjBMhV4uSM

Ironically for an anti-Japanese film, both actors in the scene used Judo: mostly throws, but also several ground techniques and some rarely-practiced striking techniques. Halloran was a former LAPD officer and Judo instructor who - along with another Judo exponent, Ken Kuniyuki - taught the art to Cagney. The scene harks back to the days when movie fights actually looked like proper fights, instead of the completely unrealistic foom-foom-foom of more modern times.

And a runner-up, for pure bad-assery, is Chen Zhen (Jet Li) vs General Fujita (Billy Chow):

For those who don't know, Billy Chow is a former world kickboxing champion. The style shows. Jet Li requires no introduction. :)

There are two great scenes in "The Princess Bride"
When the two heroes first meet they have an extended sword fight. After quite a while one says "I have to tell you that I'm not left handed" and swops hands.
A little bit later the other one does the same!

Later when the hero catches up with his sworn enemy, the six fingered man, he kills all the bodyguards in three seconds. You have to watch it in slow-mo to see how he does it.
Sorry but I cannot remember their names.

I always found Bruce Lee fights a bit crap.

Anything with Yuen Biao, Samo Hung and Jackie Chan fighting together/each other, just about beats (hahahahaah I'm a fricking comedian) anything.

The extended fight scene in Banlieue 13: Ultimatum, not only does it involve a glorious smackdown but it does so using a 200 million euro Van Gogh.. without the painting getting a scratch.

French filmmaking at it's finest.

I approve of this message, as does the narrator.

My favorites: The Jedi/Sith duel between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, the ending sequence in "Equilibrium" when John Preston fights his way to "Father", the fight between Marv and Kevin in "Sin City", and the epic struggle between giant chicken and Peter Griffin.

It's not as extravagant as some of the modern ultra-realistic scenes, but this is definitely a classic.

Anything from Hero ranks pretty highly in my books. The fights may be over-choreographed, but the textures and colours are just beautiful. The fight at the chess house, the fight in the fall forest, the fight at the monestary... I need to watch that movie again.

The fight scene between Batty and Deckard at the end of Blade Runner is also pretty good. More gritty than hero, but it's also got more character and substance. Hero's fight scenes, while beautiful to watch, don't do much for the plot and characters.

Tough question.
I'm a big Jet Li fan, so there are quite a lot of fights of him that I prefer.

All the scenes from the reassembled footage of Bruce Lee's "Game of Death", but especially the one where he's just using a thin flexible stick.

Almost everything Jackie Chan's ever done.

The "slap scene" from the little known fils "My Name is Nobody" (they used it in a commercial not too long ago)...

A fairly recent favorite that comes to mind is the oil-soaked-floor fight scene in "The Transporter" (whish this vid wasn't so dark)...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4XPTBrWkDM

And has anyone mentioned gunfights? How about Val Kilmer looking completely bad-*** with a machine gun in the big shootout from "Heat"?

in Rob Roy (1995). Considered by many to be the greatest sword fight ever filmed. Masterfully choreographed by William Hobbs. Rapier vs broadsword.

If there was ever a movie villain that needed killing, it was Tim Roth's Archibald Cunningham:

There are so many more "older" classic i could / could not find but i'm lazy.
Now you probably know which part of the world i'm from.

For english movies the only one that i know can really fight is jean claude van damme, saw his movies on various movies like universal solder and the quest he got some really nice foot work.

There is a fight scene in 24(season 2 or 3) where jack bauer (kiefer sutherland) fought in a stadium that is quite intense for a tv series.

The reader's definition of the question comes into play in this thread in a huge way.

Are we talking about the most technically brilliant fighting martial arts wise, or boxing wise?

Street fighting; with or without whatever of the variety of martial weapons?

Or just the most awe inspiring film footage of a fight. One that presents itself as real to the observer.

This last definition is the one that I am relating to.

Yes, I didn't mean to criticize you. I'm just looking at those horse falls and it's obvious to me the horses were hurt (they are landing on their heads and necks!) Assuming that movie was made in the 70's or 80's and in India, I'd say it's a good bet that the "No animals were harmed in the making of this film" disclaimer doesn't apply. Tripping horses with a wire was common back then even in the US (or a little earlier in the US maybe). Really painful to watch.

You're right though, the action kicks butt (though how does throwing an exhaust pipe at a jeep's grill launch it 30' into the air?).
