Gnome mouse click sounds in Kubuntu

Hi All,

I'm having minor, but very annoying, issue in Kubuntu 9.10.
Recently I installed the Gnome desktop to see if certain bugs I was experiencing were KDE-centric. I have since uninstalled Gnome (and reconfigured my audio drivers and reinstalled wicd, all of which was made short shrift of by Gnome), but one thing I can't get rid of is this annoying drum click sound in certain applications. All extension buttons in my browser now make the click sound, as well as the TrueCrypt GUI.

I know this is a very minor issue, but I've always configured my operating systems with absolutely no system sounds (only audio and video playback), so I'm finding this particularly distracting. Right now, the only option I have is to mute PCM volume, which also mutes streaming audio and video in my browser...

I'm at my wit's end. I have all sound notifications turned off in system settings (though there were relatively few to begin with in KDE). Please tell me there's a magic sudo code I can cast to exorcise my computer of mouse click sounds.

it's very complicated removing remnants of gnome, it's best to test them on separate machines or boot devices.


there are things you can do except you will risk breakage.


i hear it's best to use aptitude instead of apt-get, i think it's because it tracks all packages and dependencies, if you decided to remove something' you will be able to rid of all remnants.

Yes, I remember I ended up reinstalling Ubuntu the first time I tried to install another desktop. Well, consider the lesson thoroughly learned now.

So any ideas how to get those sounds off my computer?

okay, here we go, you can reinstall ubuntu desktop using aptitude instead of apt-get, then remove ubuntu desktop with aptitude.



Aptitude

Aptitude is a terminal-based package manager that can be used instead of apt-get. Aptitude marks packages that are automatically installed and removes them when no packages depend on them. This makes it easy to remove applications completely. To use Aptitude, replace apt-get with aptitude in the command line. Example:


sudo aptitude install packagename
sudo aptitude remove packagename
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude upgrade



For an ncurses-based graphical user interface, type


sudo aptitude

now here's the deal, i have no doubt that there are much more remnants left behind, at least this way you have a chance.

did you copy and paste the entire ubuntu removal command ?

Yeah, I got it all in there. I thought about excluding the last bit on installing Kubuntu desktop as I still had it, but I left it in the command for good measure. Ah, but to no avail.

I've also tried checking gnome sound preferences because I figured that's where the sounds are coming from, but that got removed with the gnome desktop as well. If I could just find out where the sound files are, I'd happily delete them...anyway, it'll have to wait till later this week.

Upon further inspection, Gnome is STILL installed much to my chagrin. I found it by way of checking the session options. Checking now, I see a bunch of gnome packages in my package manager.

Anyway, after fooling around a bit, I found out that selecting "No Sounds" from the Gnome sounds preferences did not affect my KDE session, but selecting "Mute" for system alerts did. No more spurious mouse clicks sounds. I can sleep easy now.
