How do I upgrade, keeping my current files, to 9.10?
Does it automatically do everything for me?
How long should it take?

To upgrade go to System>Administration>Software Sources and click on the Updates tab. When you do that, select Normal Releases from the Release subcategory.

After this is done just open Update Manager and it will find the 9.10 files and just click update. This will update your computer to 9.10.

I don't really know how long it will take for you but with my laptop (upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10) connected to DSL at 768 KBps and with my single core CPU it took me about 2 hours for the whole process to finish.

First you need to upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10[1], then 8.10 to 9.04[2], and then 9.04 to 9.10[3]. Procedures for each are below:

You might want to wait a little for the 10.4LTS release. There will be a direct upgrade path from 8.04 to 10.04. It is mostly working already and should be ready by release.

Before updating, back up your files. There are no 100% guarantees that all will go well.
