hello,

after installing the recent update a few days ago I restarted my computer and after the Grub menu the Ubuntu symbol would pop up, and when it left there's just a blank black screen and nothing changes... when I press the power button I get this message (if it helps).

any suggestions are awesome, I don't even begin to know what to do

Ubuntu 9.10 amd64
dual-boot Windows 7
ATI Radeon HD 4750

Hi guys,

I just installed a clean verion of Ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala but I can't login in the gnome session. When I enter my username and my password, there's a brief black screen and then it goes back to the login screen over and over.
When I log into the failsafe mode it's ok but there's nothing much I can do there.

I could really use your help ...
Thanks

Run the bootinfoscript (http://bootinfoscript.sourceforge.net/) and post the results back here.

Edit: did you try booting an older kernel?

Create a separate thread - more likely to get help that way.

I would also try reinstalling since you've got no data to lose - and (if you haven't already) make sure that you can run the liveCD (the 'Try it without any changes to your computer' option) to make sure all your hardware is supported.

I could really use some help with this problem, too! After rebooting to finish installing the latest updates, and after the splash screen, the "loading" symbol just runs and runs and runs. I'm able to boot from the Live CD - that's what I'm using right now.

Here are the results (I hope) from the Boot Info Script:

I could really use some help with this problem, too! After rebooting to finish installing the latest updates, and after the splash screen, the "loading" symbol just runs and runs and runs. I'm able to boot from the Live CD - that's what I'm using right now.

I can't see anything wrong in the bootinfoscript results (doesn't mean there isn't anything, but I don't see it).

I would try booting your previous working kernel (19) and then remove and reinstall 20. If you can't boot any previous kernels then I suggest creating a new thread and maybe someone else can help.

Edit: another idea... when grub boots press 'e' to edit the selected entry, using cursor and delete keys remove 'quiet splash', then ctrl-x to boot. You'll see messages as it boots and hopefully what the actual issue is - and will narrow down searching for a solution.

here's the results.txt

The relevant line in your results.txt is "/dev/sda5: ambivalent result (probably more filesystems on the device)". It looks like you've been hit by this bug: http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/bootinfoscript/index.php?title=Boot_Problems:minix

The solution is very simple and quick though (thanks to Meierfra's work).

Great! There's a bug report for this at https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/518582 - if you have a launchpad account you can click on 'This bug affects # people'. The more people that do this means it will get fixed sooner.
