Am running 9.10 and a recent update has caused my desktop icons to disappear upon system start. If I open the trash, the items reappear. I have a USB stick that does not automount either until I open the trash. Anyone else experience this? Is there a fix?

Sounds like `nautilus` is not running at GNOME startup like it should.
Have you recently "test-drove" the Netbook interface packages by any chance?

Nope, haven't test drove netbook interface. I believe this is relatively common problem tied to libglib version.
