Problem with Desktop

Hello all,

Using Ubuntu 9.10. No fancy display setting used.

My desktop background has totally disappeared, but the top and bottom toolbars appear OK when I move the cursor to the top and bottom, respectively.

The problem persists in Firefox. When I hit F11, the screen goes blank.

In addition, the system crashes now and then (Ubuntu!!???) typically when I have Firefox open and then try reading a PDF document.

What could possibly cause this?

Turning off all visual effects cured it.
I am still a little puzzled since I never changed that setting. Something else must have changed in Ubuntu to cause the problem.

Anyway, in addition to having my desktop back, I also seem to have a stable system.:D

I had a similar problem w/ a new install. The background was black, couldn't change it, couldn't see the file icons. Problem went away when I changed 'visual effects' to none.

The problem occurs even when setting basic effects??
