Installing DirectFB 1.4.3

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and I'm trying to install DirectFB 1.4.3.
I can do it with no problems by downloading the sources from the directfb website and installing it by hand.
but I can't replace the 1.2 stable version that is in the apt-get tree.
Is it possible to do it?

I, too, am interested in using DirectFB in ubuntu ontop of X server and gdm. The joke known as DirectFB Tutorials mentions a directfb.h in what I assume to be C.

Any mention or movement on Ubuntu + DirectFB would be greatly appreciated. :D

you can install directFB over the "marketplace"
I am just now trying qingy, a directfb getty replacement.
This was one of my favourite apps on gentoo. :)
