Is there a way to remove the Volume control from the top panel in Gnome?

I am slowly trying to widdle away the top panel all together and switch completely to AWN. So if someone knows how to get a network manager applet into AWN, that would be exciting as well. The lack of a network manager applet is the only thing keeping me from removing the top panel all together.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Don't you just right click on the spkr icon, then select remove from panel? (I moved mine down to the bottom panel, not curently using awn.)

Can't you add it as a launcher - command would be 'nm-connection-editor' ?
