Hey,

Im currently using Windows XP on my HP Compaq nx5000 and want to install Ubuntu on it. Do i use the Desktop ISO file or another. Please this is urgent thanks!

Just use the normal desktop cd boot from it and do a normal install and you can check the installation issues before installing here for reading about it https://help.ubuntu.com/9.10/switching/installing.html
If you don't know much about Linux you should not go for the alternate cd.

Actually, if you're not very experienced with Linux, you should not force an install on an untried machine.

You should boot from the LiveCD to see how well it works, and how well it detects your hardware and installs the proper drivers.

Unlike with MS Windows, there is no Driver CD you insert to install the drivers. So, any drivers that do not get installed during LiveCD mode, and result in hardware not working, are going to range from trivial to impossible to fix in the real installation.
