On Mac OS X, when you switch from one workspace to another with Spaces, an on-screen window display is presented that looks like this:

As you are moving from one workspace to another, it has a little arrow showing how it moves from one to another.

I was wondering if there is a way of getting a similar animation when moving between workspaces in Xfce.

Not exactly. We have a Dock called Cairo dock like yours. I have it on my desktop, I'm an old OSX fan turned Xubuntu on a laptop. What we do have is a workspace switcher that can can be placed in the panel on top or wherever you like the panel to be. I'll add a picture for your convenience. This panel, unlike Macs can not only be moved it can disappear like your dock and so can our dock to give a clear full screen view. Here is a crop of the corner of my panel:

If you use compiz and enable the desktop wall you can get a very similar effect, but you'll lose the cube and all of the cube plugins in the process.

Thanks, I don't use compiz, didn't know that.
