problems installing from flash drive

Hello

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 from flash drive and not from CD.
I've read the instruction about creating a copy on a flash drive.
after finishing installation i get :

error: no such device: @#$##@
press any key to continue

i've tried several suggestion from the forum but couldnt make it work.
i'm trying to install Ubuntu on thinkpad R40 as only OS/
