That's gorgeous, I do like orchids, but it makes me uncomfortable how freely people wave them about. They should be enjoyed in private.

Hello!! This is OpenBSD 4.6 on my netbook. Cwm is being used as the window manager and Xcompmgr is providing the shadows. The only extra software installed, right now, is Feh, Scrot, and Mpg123.

The next thing that I want to do is learn how to set all the funky terminal colors like Daisuke_Aramaki does in his screenshots.

I do like it but it seems to be grossly outdated. I can't seem to get it update the software on it as it has Firefox 3.1 Beta 3 and we are in Firefox 3.6.1. So I am hoping there would be a new release soon as the version I am running came out back in June of 2009.

There should be a OpenSolaris 2010.03 release, according to this (http://ptribble.blogspot.com/2010/02/opening-up-some-details-of-opensolaris.html).

Oh, and your theme work isn't half-bad either.... only thing I'd change is the gaps in the tint2... The pink in the active-window sorta makes me curious about the look of the OBmenu (try to include it in your screenshots in future) :)

Well I'll try... It's Openbox with tint2 of course, The theme (GTK+Openbox) was supposed to be compact-Murrine-Wisteria, but today I realized it had inherited the colours from the elementary-compact theme I used previously (and I was wondering what was wrong with it and why it wouldn't pair with its openbox theme) and the icons are AnyColourYouLike, colour #141414, Wallpaper was attached a couple of pages ago, and the fonts are Aller 8 everywhere, Terminus 10 in the terminal, and Some leftover Sansation 8 in some points.

If you need something more specific go ahead and ask :)

I had that wall 5 months now, and I couldn't make it work with a theme :) Now it does. :lolflag: The theme does have that weird little colour. I need to hand-edit that obt to make one that's a big more grayscale. Tint2 in general needs a lot of things. Different colours and paddings in everything, disabled icons, etc etc, which I'll do today.

I'm wondering why you didn't criticize the fact that I have icons on the desktop. :P :D

Menubar text colour needs to match the inactive title text colour, or at least be somewhere in-between the inactive and active text colour.

Wow, Murrine progress. I love that they've brought back the old-style, filled arrows - it was the main reason I began incorporating the Aurora engine into my theme.

Speaking of, finally got around to uploading a new version of my theme.

You can change that in your appearance settings. I forget exacly where it is in the gnome appearance dialoge, but it is there somewhere. I think maybe you choose a theme and click "customize", then you change tabs. Or maybe you dont even have to click customize, I cant remember. I do know for sure though that there is an option for text only, icon and text, or icon only.

@koleoptero, thanks for the icon/text tip. I had set that to icons only ages ago but must have messed with a setting in gconf-editor as it wasn't working. Switch to text and back to icons has it sorted, I'm a big boy now too!

Another Gnome question, Gnome users. I have my root menu set to appear with a right-click on the desktop...
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=875262
..and a single gnome-panel at screen-bottom set fully transparent, with Compiz set NOT to draw shadows under the panel. The problem is I want to un-expand the panel so I can right-click the desktop when an app is maximized, but compiz butts the maximized window right up to the panel, resulting in a shadow where there is no panel and no shadow where there is one.

Is there a way to create a bottom margin to maximized windows to allow for a shadow, or some other workaround? I'm tempted to just use xcompmgr in Gnome for shadows as I don't have this problem with xcompmgr/tint2.

I'll edit this post with a screenshot in a minute, I have to exit to Gnome...

..either I'm being daft or this setting isn't there in Lucid Alpha 3. So for any Lucid users who want to do this, take note: I had to tweak the "/desktop/gnome/interface/toolbar_style" key in gconf-editor to set it.

Hello, szadek_ (you're very polite for a Decepticon, btw) :P

The fonts you see in that screenshot are Bauhaus Medium (Bauhaus Md Bt).
The size used is 8.5 - 9 , I think.
You use KDE, right? I'm not sure how KDE renders fonts, so you'll have to experiment with the hinting variables a bit.

I've attached a .zip containing Bauhaus Md and Bauhaus Lt.

I used the iRave theme and icon set from gnome-look.org. The wallpaper is a photo of me with a band called Downhere. The quality isn't good because it was taken from my Blackberry Pearl. I was at their concert last Saturday in Abilene, Texas. BTW, I'm the guy in the purple Abilene Christian University shirt. Yes, I do have a Cowon D2 plugged into my computer. Bought it a few months ago and love it to bits.

Start with scrotwm, it's basically DWM without a status bar and a text config file. It should get you into the loop. After a day of using scrotwm, I moved up to DWM.

I would have imagined on a netbook, with those screen constraints, you'd use more workspaces; not fewer. By no means a criticism, it's just curious.

Oh and BTW, if you're interested in saving Firefox screen space, try going sans-tabs. You can configure Firefox's behaviour in about:config, so external links/bookmarks/middle-clicking link opens them in new windows. and set the tabbar to autohide in Firefox's preferences. You can also enable compiz's Window Previews plugin, to get thumbnails when hovering over the tasklist.

He made that?... the finish looks really good.
Is it made from scratch or a frankenstein job?
Nice desktop as well... gmail icon looks out of place, though.

P.S: I thought Conky was your hubby :p

Yup, he made it from scratch, except for the neck, that was bought. But he machined and painted the body, and custom-assembled all the hardware with parts from Japan and the best pickups money can buy :) I'm very proud.

I agree, tho, the gmail icon is out of place...I haven't got around to sorting out the systray icons because they're in a different location. The weather icons aren't mine either, they're elementary-monochrome, because I haven't gotten around to replacing them all yet :)

And no, Conky is not my hubby!

(Full) pics. Or it didn't happen :p

Well, I don't have assembly shots, but I can do another shot with the blue one as well...

I wouldn't mind the details though.

I really like the screenshots in this thread. It actually inspired me to create a user account on these forums even though I am generally a OpenBSD user (but since other BSD users are here, I hope that's okay).

If I might ask, how does one go about creating terminal windows with all the different colors of text? Xterm only has a -fg and -bg color switches, so I assume this is accomplished by some other means.

I really only use the netbook for the web so the second workspace really only gets used when I want to do a quick gimp edit or sometimes I'll put pidgin on it, I could probably get away with only one workspace but where is the fun in that.

For firefox I prefer to keep everything in the same window so I am using the compact menu add-on with everything set to small icons and I removed the bookmark bar and all the other spaces.

I was unaware of that compiz plugin I'll have to give that a try. Thanks for the suggestions.

Wow, some beautiful desktops today....

I am slowly abandoning all colour, it fits my mood lately.

Upon further review, tint2's tray will NOT inherit my icon theme. I have no idea why.

What window manager are you using?

If Openbox, open your ~/.config/openbox/rc.xml and where this line inside the theme section - add an 'N' to the start of it.

<titleLayout>NLDIMC</titleLayout>
And reload using:

openbox --reconfigure

Then open up one of the affected programs that aren't showing the correct icon, and compared the icon to the one you should now see in the top left corner. If identical, this isn't a tint2 issue, but an issue with the applications own internal way of getting it's icon.

it depends on the apps. wicd, pidgin, volwheel and dropbox don't follow your icon theme.

deluge and parcellite do.

edit: also, parcellite will only change the icon when you restart tint2. deluge does not need this.

edit2: i have sent a patch to volwheel dev some time ago, but the project looks dead.

two thumbs up, that looks great :)
Thanks for the kind words, TJ
How're your console app colorschemes coming along, btw?

edit2: i have sent a patch to volwheel dev some time ago, but the project looks dead.

Yeah, it's been stagnant for a while. Volwheel is part of the reason why I didn't really change icon themes much in the past, since I was too lazy to make a new .png speaker icon to match each icon set.
I don't bother with it anymore, though, since I just use the Fn keys to adjust the volume these days and have disabled the volwheel tray icon altogether.

It's actually quite nice.
Like downtown said, Janet Jackson and Joe Satch on the same playlist is a bit mind-boggling, but at least you're open-minded (either that or you enjoyed that superbowl blooper more than most) :p
You take way more risks than I do with regards to colour combos, but it looks pretty good here.

I'd suggest for a lighter shade of blue with less saturation. Easier on the eyes. And a more creative wallpaper (which I suggest only because I know you can do better than that :P).

Hmm.... I assume you're using standard Ubuntu?

It's Debian(Sid) running the Openbox window manager. The system monitor on the top left is Conky and the panel is Tint2. The right-click menu you see in the screenshot is OBmenu.

You can install Openbox alongside the regular Ubuntu Gnome/KDE/Xfce environment, but it requires a bit of work.
Refer to Urukrama's Monumental Blog (http://urukrama.wordpress.com/openbox-guide/) for detailed instructions.

An easier option is to install CrunchBang Linux (http://crunchbanglinux.org/) which is currently based on Ubuntu 9.04 (next version might be based on Debian Squeeze or Ubuntu Lucid, it hasnt been decided yet). My current setup is heavily inspired by CrunchBang (many of the configs are from my old CrunchBang install), so it's definitely a good place to start.

You can also run Openbox within Gnome, but I'm not really familiar with that route, so you might wanna ask koleoptero, hhh, Ginsu, Berk, danielrmt, matty-guy or many others among the well-versed folk here for advise on that front.

If you're already familiar with Openbox (meaning the last few paragraphs were just a waste of your time), then I can just send you my current configs, themerc, and other details if you want.

Feel free to ask if you need further clarification.
Hope this helps....
Cheers :)

For those of you who haven't caught the buzz yet, Jono Bacon has just announced the rebranding for 10.04! http://www.jonobacon.org/2010/03/03/refreshing-the-ubuntu-brand/

The short version: brown is gone, aubergine is in!
Thanks for posting this! I hadn't seen it yet, but then I've hardly had time to open Evo, let alone check all my feeds. Damned Twitter has been a time sink hunting for people to add. :p I'm BostonPeng in case anyone wants to find me there.
