1Mbs Cable from Comcast (USA)

I am thinking to switch my internet provider and Comcast have a 1Mbs "Economy package" and another one is 12Mbs "Performance" but cost a bit more.
I am kind of considering to get Economy package to same some money. Thinking if I could live with such speed or not.

What kind of speeds in Kbs do you think I would get with this (1Mbs)?

Kdar, no way to verbally explain it, but if you know anyone with 1.5Mbps DSL from Verizon, AT&T or other phone company, see if you can spend a bit of time on their machine online. You'll get the feel for that zone of speed and can tell if you'd like it or if you would want more. DSL is about the only thing I can think of that is close to the speed you are considering, but all DSL is not 1.5Mbps so you need to be sure what you're using to compare to.

Some cable companies have systems in their customer service areas you can try out their services on. Perhaps a call to the local office could answer whether you can try it or not. You can always start on the lower one and upgrade to the higher service if it is insufficient....same modem, same setup. They just open you up to more bandwidth.

I would call and demand my money back. If it's 54mpbs and you're getting less than 1mpbs, you're getting ripped off pretty bad.

What I meant was downloading files or vids this is wireless 3 lappys on internet and ps3 online gameing at the same time :P so im not complaining about the speed .

I have a 1Mbps connection here in India; I get (as calculated) 120+KBps. With this, I can watch youtube streaming quite smoothly, but NOT HD videos. I was earlier using 512kbps, and there was quite frequent caching interruptions.

Downloading an Ubuntu CD image at this speed will take approximately 1.5 hours. Video conferencing is comfortable (VGA res webcam).

Hope these help as a frame of reference.

Incidentally, I pay Rs 1300 (Approx US$28 ) per month for unlimited traffic, 512kbps daytime, 1mbps nighttime. How does this compare costwise with your options? (Just curious).

How even my stepson who downloads rapidshare files says its faster 5 files at 800-900kbs each as for internet speed its superfast i never see the page loading bar because its already on the next website and were wireless 3lappys on internet and ps3 online gaming all at the same time it never slows down. yes expensive but worth it as i have the full tv,phone,broadband package with them.

because at a package rated at 50mbps you should see download speeds of up to 6.25MB/s

800-900KB/s is equivalent to 6.4-7.2mbps.... think about that

I think what he meant here is that Mb/s doesn't mean the same as MB/s. Essentially, what you are looking at here is 1MB/s +/- when it states 10 Mb/s. I have 3Mb/s which, as the computer shows as I'm downloading, usually runs at 320-370KB/s and I'm rather happy with those speeds.

+1. I sense a bit of confusion in this thread about terminology and I'm a little bit confused about whether some of the posters are talking megabits or megabytes......
1Mb/sec (I'm referring to megabytes here) is about what I get if I connect through my mobile phone. 1mb (that's megabits) seems a little bit slow.

My AT&T Uverse dsl is 6mb/s down and 1mb/s up. I've had 1.5 and 3.0 in the past. If you want to stream SD video, you need 3 mb/s IMHO. Since we DL a lot of files to maintain Linux, that also makes it important to have the highestspeed practical for your economic situation.

I frequently see speeds of 700-720 KB/s on large amounts of data, like when updating Ubuntu. The theoretical maximum is 732.4 KB/s, but that can't occur due to the time it takes to acknowledge an intact block and to begin the next, in other words, your ping rate.

Here's my speedtest.net result, about 10 miles distant physically from the participating ISP's server.
