SCENARIO:

Old laptop (CPU intel 850MHz, RAM 128MiB, HD 6GiB)
Xubuntu 9.10 Alternate install CD
Guided partitioning using the entire disk, complete install and reboot.
Installed LXDE Desktop: lubuntu-desktop
Installed more applications: galculator gnash leafpad ktouch abiword openoffice.org-math openoffice.org-writer mozilla-openoffice.org openoffice.org-calc openclipart-openoffice.org openoffice.org-impress gpaint empathy pidgin xchat thunderbird kazehakase gcompris xubuntu-restricted-extras cups-pdf cryptsetup ntp ntpdate
Installed some tools: build-essential linux-headers-generic alien tsclient system-config-samba smbfs
Rebooted and logged with LXDE session
Update & upgrade packages
Rebooted with LXDE as default

Message dialog when entering the desktop session:


Error: Unable to establish connection with FAM.
Do you have "FAM" or "Gamin" installed and running?

The background and desktop area is not visible until the user launches pcmanfm.
Rebooted again, but the problem remains.
