First install had sound initially and then somewhere along the upgrade path lost it.
Started with kernel.14 and finished with .19

Have sound back now after the reinstall.

I'm not game to upgrade again (100 & something auto downloads ready to go) because I don't know what is stuffing the sound. I have a CM8738 sound card.

I really like Ubuntu but this issue is not for the first time giving me the creeps. I reckon 8.04 did it to me to!

Any recommendations re upgrades to dodge this 'bullet'?

Thanks for reading this post.

Try booting into kernel 14 and see if that works. I know my mic didn't work for kernel 19 but works perfectly with kernel 14.

Is it a forgone conclusion that subsequent auto upgrades will stuff the sound somewhere?

I have sound now (see reedited post) just want to avoid losing it again.
cheers

in other words, I don't know whether to auto update or not.
Any advice please?
