Ubuntu:

Do you pronounce it as "youboontoo", "uhboontoo" or "ooboontoo"?

There's several different 'buntus out there, and I've always found it fascinating with their creativity.

kubuntu, xubuntu, etc.

for me, I think I realize why they call this specific distro "Ubuntu" because it the "buntu" for "u" :P therefor "u" "buntu" .. and I wound up considering the pronounciation of ubuntu as youboontoo. I've always said ither uhboontoo or ooboontoo.

Howbout "u" buntu'rs?

I try to say it the right way when I tell someone about it for the first time, but it's really natural make the "oo" (u: ) sound 3 times in a row like that in English.

you-buhnt-oo is much easier to say.

Luckily in my language there is really only one sensible way to pronounce it.
Even more lucky, it is consistent with the official pronunciation. :D

"oo-BOON-too"

Remember when they changed Jiff to Ciff so that everyone would be able to be able to pronounce it the same?
in Turkey C is pronounced J so there it's Jiff again.
What a funny old world.

Not ANOTHER one of these threads. It really doesn't matter that much.

That's what I was kinda thinking. Most terms in technology go through this:
Sysop - s-i-sop vs s-eye-sop
Gnome - nome vs g-nome
Mono - m-oh-n-oh (Spanish for Monkey) vs m-ah-n-oh (Mononucleosis)
Linux - L-ie-nex vs L-i-nex vs L-i-nux

And then you have the other way around where non-techie's hear something and try to spell it out incorrectly:
Scuzzy or Skuzzy - SCSI (this is my fav!)
Lynux - Linux (Seen this on WAY too many resumes)

I know it's "boon" but I say "bun" guess I'm just a hill billy.

I say
oo-boon-too
which, right or wrong, is at least close. I'm completely hopeless on the other two though:
kay-boon-too
ex-oo-boon-too

Does anyone else feel silly saying it? It makes me want to use another distro so I can say something suave like "Fedora". :D

I've always pronounced it you-boon-too but the official pronunciations are:

Ubuntu = oo-boon-too
Kubuntu = koo-boon-too
Xubuntu = zoo-boon-too

Pretty confusing isn't it?

Is the .gif image file format pronounced "J"-if like the penutbutter? or is it more of "Gh"-if as if you where to say the word "Give"

I seem to remember arguing this back in high school but before we could settle it I just threw my hands up and said, "everyone uses .jpeg now so it really doesn't matter now does it!"

I say oo-boon-too
I believe "Ubuntu" is a Xhosa word; now Xhosa has the "X", which is clicked; so is Xubuntu pronounced zoo-boon-too or (click)oo-boon-too?
And "it" is pronounced it! :lolflag:

from my experience, it seems like a lot of english speakers pronounce it
oo-buhn-too
you-buhn-too
uh-buhn-too

which really sounds weird to me, because i speak spanish and when i look at the word, i naturally pronounce it
oo-boon-too

i guess it depends on your native language..

Yeah, that's crazy :P (really I don't like "you" and [fortunately] never heard it pronounced that way)

I believe "Ubuntu" is a Xhosa word; now Xhosa has the "X", which is clicked; so is Xubuntu pronounced zoo-boon-too or (click)oo-boon-too?
holy moly. I am ready for click oo boon too.
Techsnap, stick with Slackware. *autonomy ducks*
sleepee, I had a feeling that was the natural spanish pronunciation.
