I've been installing an Ubuntu partition on all the computers I've been fixing in work. The reason is to give the user a choice of what operating system they want to use and to raise awareness of Ubuntu. Honestly I don't expect many people to choose to use Ubuntu when they aren't familiar with it but it's good that the option is there if anyone gets curious. The problem I have is the welcome screen with Ubuntu 9.10. I think the welcome screen for Windows (the press alt-ctrl-delete one) looks alot more professional and neater than the Ubuntu one. Does anyone know of any good looking professional login screens or have any tips for making Ubuntu look sleek and more professional?

Apparently that's all to change in 10:04 (Lucid Lynx) so I'd say wait a month.

It IS a bit of a pain atm to change gdm

I agree, the logon screen is very boring. I haven't changed it myself but I've looked into doing it a little bit. I'm guessing you're using 9.10? If you are then these links describe ways to do it.

if you're looking for some cool splash screens check out gnome look:

Have a look at the Startup Manager. A GUI for changing all of those things like login screens, time-outs, number of kernels to display.

Here is how to install:

Then have a look at GnomeLook for GDM themes:

thanks for the reminder. i almost suggested he try making his own, using his company's logo, but gdm seems to have shot itself in the head (it's still quite possible with kdm, though).
