While upgrading from 9.04 to 9.10 using Alternate CD, the OS crashed. I had updated the 9.04 with latest updates and then started the upgradation to 9.10 using a Alternate CD. But after some time, the computer resarted and the screen displayed six line of 9.04 startup line. I waited for ten minutes but nothing happned.

What can be the reason and what should be done in that situation.

Were you trying to upgrade or to do a clean install after backing up your home and data? As far as I know, the second method is suggested for a trouble free upgrade.

@white: update manager is quite stress-free but not perfect.
@ OP: disc may be defective, not likely but possible

@white: errors are quite rare but men [not God] wrote the software. I update without a fear because the errors are so rare.
Edit: I once had a sound driver error, which is the one error I've heard of from others
