Every night, instead of turning my laptop off, I usually do CTRL+ALT+F1 and then turn off the laptop display with Fn+F6. This gives me the ability to hop on rapidly in emergencies. I tried suspend, but unfortunately my Acer laptop doesn't suspend very well with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. I wanted to ask if there's a way to trap me switching to tty1 and to have it automatically slow the processor way, way down, and if I go back to the GNOME desktop it speeds the processor back up. This might give me some power savings without going into the suspend mode.
