I am using a GPRS modem with 9.10. It's a ZTE MF626, no need for wine for me.

My point was that my GPRS usb modem also has the a .exe --and that I didn't need to resort to windows driver to get it to work.

though, I am sure that the wine solution is the perfect solution for you.

Why don't you install 9.10, take you machine to cafe with free wifi and do a "sudo apt-get install wine"
