Hello,
Currently I am having a pc with AMD athlon 64 3000+ and I am thinking to to upgrade this with a 64 X2 4800+ processor.I want to know whether reinstallation of OS (XP sp2 and UBUNTU gutsy) is required for this or they will detect the new processor and work fine without any problem?

Thank you advance.

I'm not an expert but both yours OS should work fine.Maybe you can upgrade (or fresh install even better) your Ubuntu, because you are using unsupported version.

You will not need to re-install either of the operating systems. Both will detect the change, and work as normal.

The only issue you would ever come up against is XP wanting to be re-activated, but this is unlikely since you are only changing one piece of hardware (albeit the CPU!)

You should not have a problem. I did the opposite. I swapped out motherboard & video card with same processor and hard drives. XP wanted to phone home to be reactivated. Since the video card was still nvidia, ubuntu booted without any issues.
