Almost exactly two years ago I got the community's help in picking out components for a small form factor home PC. The Shuttle case I'd bought just gave out, and it's time for a new PC. I need help picking out components for either a barebones system or a full DIY. Here are my requirements:

1) This will be a home theater PC only, so it must be quiet.

2) Can't be too big since it has to sit in my living room.

3) The specs don't need to be insane since this will only be used for watching videos, listening to music, and maybe occasionally going online. Definitely no gaming.

That's about it. I'm open to any and all suggestions. I have been thoroughly checking out antec cases, but anything quiet would be great. That shuttle I had made quite a racket.

One note: within reason budget is not really an issue. This will be a box that gets used quite a bit and I want it to be quality.

What about something like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_Box

Since you plan to watch videos on it, the important question becomes: Do you intend to ever watch HD content on it? I am pretty sure something like the EEE-PC won't do that very well. Do they make one with a better video chip, like the nVidia Ion?

Yep - I do intend to watch high-quality video content such as HD on this thing, so the eee is probably too limited.

I forgot to mention too that a surround-sound capable ubuntu-compatible sound card is important.

that's a nice low-cost option, but I'm really serious about this thing being nice and quiet, and I have NEVER heard a louder PC than my friend's mom's emachines box that she uses for email etc. The thing sounds like it has a volkswagen powering the fan or something...

tiny, cheap and low noise

In addition you need a server, some old crap computer will do fine.
Or you could invest in some NAS server or similar.

Edit, the server could be stored in another room, out of sight of of mind :)
