I noticed that windows 7 has, like , 25 + , wallpapers none of which are good. but still they have variety.

Where does ubuntu stand on providing wallpapers? I read somewhere that there is a flickr page for new wallpapers, but can't find it now..

Up till now, I have seen two wallpapers noteworthy..

One is obviously the hardy heron wallpaper. I still have it. I am never going to part with it. It looks good even in windows. In my opinion, it is simply superb. Elegant i call it. That wallpaper is the reason i use human theme on ubuntu. It made that brown/orange theme look good.

Second is from ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala. The misty morning. Another classic. I just keep looking at it. i call it Serenity. Anybody knows more about that wallpaper?? i would love to visit this place.

I wish ubuntu will have more such wallpapers in the future releases.

Just download and good pics you see on the web, so long as they are about the right size for your screen display.....

the wallpapers that come with Ubuntu are just neutral, nothing bad, nothing great, nothing breathtaking, nothing disgusting

which i think is good

Heh.

I think that Windows 7's default wallpapers are pretty cool, especially those that are pre-installed dependent on your selection of region.

Ubuntu's two are not bad. I actually really liked the coffee stain Ibex, and the Artsy Heron was really innovative (in my opinion).

Also, "in before someone mentions the ubuntu-calendar package".

I agree that the Windows wallpapers are not that great. There are two I think in Karmic that are ok, but the default one is horrible. In fact I do not think I have ever liked a default Ubuntu wallpaper.

you can scale to size using gimp image editor.
in gimp click image then scale image.

That will distort your image. Better to crop it some or to just center it on your screen and hope for the best.

Interfacelift.com has beautiful wallpapers.

TBH, I feel that the guidelines for ubuntu wallpapers have harmed the selection at some points. Take this jaunty wallpaper (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Jaunty/AlphaBackgrounds?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=rabbit3_16_10pre.png), for instance. It's brilliant, but didn't get selected, probably because of the mascot. And there's a Lucid one by the same author, also great, but probably won't make it, either. I mean, the stuff that's included is not bad, but it could, at the very least, do with some more variety.

Err... brilliant isn't the word I'd use.

Personally speaking, i prefer this (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Jaunty/AlphaBackgrounds?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=sarusaslu+waves.png) one for jaunty.

I like Dawn of Ubuntu, Hardy and Intrepid wallpapers. I am using the Intrepid one right now.

To the OP, here's that Flickr group you asked for...
http://www.flickr.com/groups/ubuntu-artwork/pool/

This should be better publicized IMO, a wallpaper pack available through your package manager (just click the link for the deb)...
http://anotherubuntu.blogspot.com/2009/11/ubuntu-extra-wallpaper-package.html
(or see this post)...
http://techdrivein.blogspot.com/2010/02/ubuntu-wallpapers-through-ubuntu-repos.html

This post is fairly recent and has some killer branded walls...
http://www.hongkiat.com/blog/60-most-execellent-ubuntu-wallpapers/

And, of course, toss "ubuntu wallpaper" into a search engine and you'll find hundreds more.

HTH.

Interfacelift.com has beautiful wallpapers.

a laptop 1280 x 800 screen display has a ratio size of an 8 x 5 image . So you do not have to 'hope for the best' provided you crop your original image to the same ratio of pixels (or the exact number of pixels if possible) it will not 'distort' when fitted to the screen. (800x600 is a 4:3 ratio)

If you use a different screen resolution then create an image in a ratio to match it, to avoid 'stretching/ distorting the image when used as wallpaper.
I'm sure there are tutorials about the optimum sizes for different screens, but this (IMO) is the simple start..

zooming helps sometimes and you don't have to change the image

In Mint when I get into the dialog to change the wallpaper, it sends me to this site (http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/) to find new ones.
